Danh Vo is a famous artist. He was born in Vietnam and now lives and works in Berlin and Mexico City. His work was from his personal relationships and fortuitous encounters, which will take its final form as objects and images, revealing different layers of meaning in the world or their former ownership, their proximity to specific events, or their currency as universal icons.
For my research blog this week, I focused on one of his works, called "Oma Totem," which he created in 2009. This artwork deals with the subject of memory in a way that resonated with me. I am particularly drawn to it, because this artwork tells his grandmother after escaping postwar in Vietnam to Berlin, Germany, using his grandmother 's maternal belongings, including a fridge, a washing machine, a television, and a crucifix, to combine together to make this artwork. Also, in this artwork, "Oma", the word in German means "grandmother". Moreover, Danh Vo made this artwork to tell us about what is society thinks foreigners need. Furthermore, what foreigners need to assimilate and adopt certain forms of Western life.

I observed that the work contained physical elements such as the fridge, washing machine, TV and a crucifix from this artwork. For me, this element evoked a connection to Danh Vo's other artwork, "Das Beste oder Nichts".  Also, I noticed this feature of the work helps tell a story, both the help and expectation for immigrants.
