Pieter Schoolwerth is a U.S. artist who experiments with how abstraction changes the way human forms are shown in paintings, exploring the impact of simplified shapes and styles.
For my research blog this week, I focused on one of his paintings, "Shifted Sims #9 (Eco Lifestyle)". In this painting, Pieter Schoolwerth references the popular life-simulation computer game The Sims 4, specifically a scene from the Eco Lifestyle downloadable content pack. The painting shows a modern, Eco-friendly home with furniture and plants. Three Sims avatars are shown engaging in activities within the scene. Moreover, we can see in the lower right corner that there is a baby Yoda from this painting.
This painting show how to reflect the quality of a digital image, it mixes the clean and look of a video game with roughness. Pieter Schoolwerth was making foam models of the sims and edit the image to print them on canvas using by an inkjet printer. Then, he added some thick oil and acrylic paint to make the inkjet layer sharp and smooth, similar to a game screenshot on a computer seeing. Moreover, "Shifted Sims #9 (Eco Lifestyle)" told us about global warming and environmental issues. The Eco-friendly home and activities like composting and herb-picking reflect the game ‘s focus on sustainability and mirroring real-world efforts to fight climate change. Also, This painting invites us to reflect on how our digital selves engage with real-world problems, urging a deeper connection to the environment beyond the screen.
