Yasunao Tone was a Japanese artist and musician who made strange, exciting sounds. He loved mixing art, music, and ideas in new ways. His works include Clapping Piece (1963) and Solo for Wounded CD (1997).
From this week, my research blog I focus on one of the tracks from an album, called "Solo For Wounded Part I" is a 14-minute track on the Solo For Wounded CD. This track is using “wounded” CDs and stick tape on CDs to make them skip and glitch on purpose. The skip created wild and broken sounds. In Part I of the Solo For Wounded album, the track will start quietly, with little zaps and clicks, like a CD player struggling to work. Then it gets louder and messier, with skips piling up into strange, rhythmic patterns. At the end of the track, the noise explodes into a storm of glitches, then fades away.
To sum up, “Solo for Wounded Part I" is a daring, mind-bending track that challenges everything we think about music. Using wound CDs and letting them skip. This 14-minute track shows us that we can hide in broken things, and mistakes can spark creativity.
